Description

Southcott and Jones present 'Not the Summer Exhibition' is the fourth exhibition showcasing the latest abstract landscape paintings from the London-based artist Christopher Jones.

Christopher's work is influenced by his urban surroundings and growing up in the landscapes of Wales and Norway. Never a simple snapshot, nor an emotional outpouring, Christopher uses his paintings as an opportunity to reimagine memories and make sense of the ever-changing contemporary landscape.

Why I paint?
In my kitchen, the table is now clear. The fruit bowl has been cast aside and looks on from the window sill where the herbs have come to the party and finally started to sprout.

Painting in the morning has an urgency, the knife moves quickly needing to make a mark on the day as much as the canvas. Much like a schedule for the day, these morning strokes can be the basis of the day of a final painting or something to run from. Thus, painting in the evening is often more destructive - canvases are covered up - layers hide past certainties, clear messages are obscured. Yet it is the ability find these colours again that is what makes the painting whole. Scratching and bringing the hidden back into view - perhaps that is ultimately why I paint.
